Unafraid of the wildest generalisations and grossest oversimplifications we start by saying there are really only two types of restaurants: those you go to for what you get on the plate, and those you go for all those things covered by the mysterious word ambiance.

Good food can be had in Paris for quite reasonable prices. If, on the other hand, you are willing to invest in the meal of a lifetime, Paris, being the city that invented the restaurant, can suplly that too.

It's funny how many people come to France and then spend their evenings in a bar pretending to be just like the ones back home. French bars should not be ignored however, some of the places learning that Anglo-Saxons like standing up and ordering at the bar, so you won't be confined to your table and your seat.
